Gauley Overnighter 2014

Gauley!!

This last weekend I headed east for the yearly Gauley overnight trip. The crew this year was Cal Mike, Ted and I. With the help of the new raft, Cal Mike and I rowed all of our gear down the Gauley’s big water Class IV and V rapids. Cal Mike and I started the trip with a warm up rowing on the lower Gauley and then meet Ted Friday night for the Upper G Saturday and Lower G Sunday.

On the upper, we had very clean lines until sweets falls where we ended up a hair to far left and hit the flake rock, the raft tacoed on us. We were extremely lucky the raft didn’t flip or pop. At night we meet up with Slim and 3 other Missouri boaters to share an overnight camp spot with. The next morning was cold and we took our time getting onto the water. The Lower was fun and at the end of the run we all loaded into the raft for the paddle out.

The trip was a great time and really showed me how far my reading whitewater skills have developed. The drive was long with a return to St. Louis around 2am. The 6am alarm was a little rough but the trip was well worth it. Hope you enjoy the pictures, until the next adventure.
